    Online Company History-
William J. McGill (1873–1949) was the owner of the Shelbyville Harness Company. He was also the co-owner of the Robinson-McGill Harness Company which used
    Beautiful Jim Key
    , the
    Educated Horse, as it's
    mascot
    .
The company began operation in 1909 and closed in 1943, according to a local interview.
Documents in Google Books indicate Shelbyville Harness supplied the U.S. military during World War I, selling harnesses at .95 each with up to 100 manufactured each week.
A story in a 1918 issue of "Shoe and Leather Reporter" magazine reports Shelbyville Harness received an Army contract for 4,000 harnesses, with Robinson-McGill Manufacturing Co. of Shelbyville being awarded a contract for 1,200 harnesses.
And a report from Chicago in a December 1919 issue of "Hide and Leather" reports "Hulan...called on the Lake Street leather dealers this week."
Another note found on line was an interview by a former employee that noted there was another owner in the 1940's by the name of
    George Hulan.
