Early 7 1/2" Made in Soviet Union Mordwa Woman Russian Cloth Doll 1922-on

Description

"Mordwa Woman" is an approximately 7 1/2" (including her hat) stuffed cloth doll that was manufactured in the Soviet Union circa 1922-1940's. She bears the "Made in Soviet Union Mordwa Woman" label on her skirt. Her gently smiling stockinet face has been needle sculpted and then painted in simple colors. Her body appears to be stuffed cloth with arms over wire armature, so she can somewhat pose. Her arms move up and down, though her legs are not wired. She is authentically costumed in a provincial outfit consisting of a charcoal black long sleeved felt tunic (pilled), a linen skirt edged in red trim (foxed), a red cotton belt at her waist, and a red kerchief headpiece.  She carries a knapsack on her back. Please notice that she still wears her lapti or woven birchbark sandals. Mordwa Woman sustains overall soil, wear, and fading to her face, hands & costume from age and storage. She may require a vacuuming.  She smells lightly of mildew.  What a remarkable and well-made character doll reflecting early Russian culture, Mordwa Woman is! A treasure--
