1834 -  Inhabitants of Lenoir County, NC say, "The extinguishment of the pubic debt and the restoration of harmony between the conflicting interests of the North and the South gave assurance of halcyon days for our union.  How suddenly, alas, has this overflowing cup of blessings been dashed from our lips!  Distress and ruin are now desoluting our land.  We believe the unauthorized, illegal, and unwarranteable removal of the public deposites from the Bank of the United States to irresponsible state banks of doubtful solvency, lies at the bottom of all our embarrassments and distresses."
